Beavertail Lighthouse Near Newport, Rhode Island

Beavertail Lighthouse Near Newport, Rhode Island

Few destinations in the United States boast a greater maritime history than Newport, Rhode Island. For centuries, it has served as an important naval hub and home to some of the world’s most iconic yachting events. This long history has left the state’s coast peppered with dozens of beautiful, storied lighthouses. Here are just a few of the best:

Castle Hill Light

It’s among the smallest and lesser-known lighthouses in Rhode Island, but the panoramic views from Castle Hill Light are arguably the best of any in the state. Tucked away at the end of Newport’s famous Ocean Drive, it eludes many tourists as it’s not particularly easy to find. While it’s technically situated on private land, the lighthouse is accessible via a small footpath from the lawn at Castle Hill Inn which is open to the public.

Rose Island Lighthouse

Set on an 18-acre island off the coast of Narragansett Bay, Rose Island Lighthouse is perhaps the closest working lighthouse to downtown Newport. While it dates back to 1869, it was recently restored to its 1912 glory, including all new heating, electricity, and water services. It now serves as one of the only lighthouses in the state that allows overnight visitors. Travelers interested in a more authentic lighthouse experience can choose to spend one night or, for a real, green, volunteering vacation, even an entire week.

Newport Harbor Light

Newport Harbor Light is another of the state’s lesser-known lighthouses. However, its history dates back to 1824 and it was the first official beacon to aid mariners into Newport in the 1800s. It has since seen a number of changes, upgrades, and moves and its current incarnation is not technically accessible to the public. As it is located on the property of the Hyatt Regency Newport, visitors to and guests of the hotel are able to visit the lighthouse grounds.

Beavertail Lighthouse

While it’s not actually located in Newport, Beavertail Lighthouse is well worth the trip. Situated on the southernmost point of nearby Jamestown, it offers sweeping views of Narragansett Bay. It’s a great place to wile away a few hours relaxing on the shore. Dating back to 1749, it’s also the third oldest lighthouse in North America. Visitors are invited to experience the onsite museum (open seasonally) to explore the collection of information and artifacts about the lighthouse.

The best views and photo opportunities of Newport’s many lighthouses are typically found on the water. There’s no better, more authentic boating experience than sailing a classic schooner. Hop aboard a tall ship for a day cruise of Narragansett Bay, including views of the area’s forts, lighthouses, mansions, America’s Cup yachts, Newport Bridge, and more.

See all that Newport has to offer with these tours!
