Outdoor Summer Adventures in Boston

There’s no shortage of adventurous things to do in Boston, Massachusetts. But its oceanfront location means the city truly comes alive in the summer months with a seemingly endless list of attractions and experiences, both on the water and off.

Here are just a few of our favorite outdoor summer adventures to add to your Beantown bucketlist:

Codzilla Thrill Boat Ride

The Codzilla Thrill Boat Ride is an assault on the senses, in a good way. This 2,800-horsepower jet boat blasts across Boston Harbor at over 40 MPH, blasting a full-on rock soundtrack and drenching passengers at almost every turn. The experience is a bit like riding inside your washing machine with a boombox on full volume. In short, you will be completely soaked and exhilarated by the end.

Surf Nantucket

If you’re itching to bone up on our surfing skills – especially if you’ve never been before – why not take a day trip to nearby Nantucket for surf lessons with some of New England’s best? Nantucket Surfari offers private and group lessons for surfers and surfer-hopefuls of all level of experience. Every session includes everything you need for a day on the water, including equipment and even a video recap of yourself on the waters of Nantucket’s beaches.

Search for Whales on the High Seas

The North Atlantic is one of the best spots in the country to search for migrating whales. A number of cruises depart out of Boston Harbor in search of the world’s largest creatures, including this 3-hour whale watching expedition that guarantees passengers a first-hand view aboard a high-speed catamaran. The Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary is also a hotspot for other marine life, including sea birds, dolphins and much more.

Climb the Urban Peaks

If you’ve ever wanted a fast introduction to rock climbing, Eastern Mountain Sports School hosts a variety of related classes in nearby Quincy, Massachusetts. At Quincy Quarry, newbie climbers are invited to learn the ropes of Rock Climbing 101 and Toprope Setup, while veterans can customize each class itinerary to the specific skills they’re looking to bolster. All classes are booked by private arrangement only, so be sure to call ahead to confirm.

Ride the Rails

Take a day trip to Cape Cod and bike the Cape Cod Rail Trail – a former railroad right-of-way that runs for 22 miles through nearby towns from Dennis to Wellfleet. The trail offers a variety of hop-off and hop-on points at most towns along the way, providing for easy snack breaks and rest stops. Its level, paved surface offers easy grades for virtually the entire run making it perfect for cyclists of all experience level.
